Steve Gump, associate director of the Office of Citizen Scholar Development, holds degrees in Asian studies and religious studies (Cornell University, AB), international human resource management (Cardiff University, MBA), East Asian languages and cultures (University of Illinois, AM), and educational organization and leadership (University of Illinois, PhD). He has authored or coauthored over 35 refereed articles, essays, research notes, book chapters, and editor's introductions for venues across his academic fields, from College Teaching and Educational Studies to the International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Since 2003, Steve has also reviewed over 150 nonfiction works, mostly academic or scholarly texts, within the fields of cultural studies, education and leadership, and writing and communication for such journals as Business & Professional Communication Quarterly; Food, Culture & Society; Japan Studies Review; the International Journal of Cross Cultural Management; the Journal of Academic Writing; the Journal of Ethics in Leadership; the Journal of General Education; the Journal of Language for International Business; the Journal of Scholarly Publishing; Publishing Research Quarterly; and the Southeast Review of Asian Studies. He currently serves as the book review editor of the Journal of Scholarly Publishing and is the author of How to Review Scholarly Books: Reading, Writing, Relishing (Princeton University Press, 2025).

Steve has lived in Japan (Mie), the United Kingdom (Wales), and six states across the Midwestern (Illinois, Iowa), Mid-Atlantic (New Jersey, New York), and Southeastern (Kentucky, Virginia) USA. He has completed the Saigoku Kannon 西国観音 pilgrimage and was once a certified cheese grader (of Caerphilly and of Cheddar and other English territorials). In his spare time, he listens to baroque opera, reads about food and foodways, and writes about writing.
